On 19-20 January 2012 the third annual IPAA PetroChallenge was held at Westside High School in Houston. This is the first time the event was organized at Westside, and this year saw a fourth school join the competition. The schools were:
- Westside High School, Houston Independent School District
- Lamar High School, Houston Independent School District
- Milby High School, Houston Independent School District
- Southwest High School, Fort Worth Independent School District
The new participants from Southwest High School travelled from Fort Worth to Houston just for the event. A total of 150 students divided into 34 teams participated.
The teams were mixed with students from all schools, and, as is common practice in PetroChallenge, the teams were all oil companies searching for oil and gas.
The competition was very tight, but at the end Team Ballers with Taahir Shaikh, Taylor Gladney and Malik Willis came out as winners with a 7364% return on investment. The top 3 teams in the IPAA PetroChallenge 2012 were:
- Team Ballers (Taahir Shaikh, Taylor Gladney, Malik Willis) 7364%
- PetroWin (Joseph Gutierrez, Carlos Chavero, Rajpal Sian, Theresa Tran) 7218%
- Los Lobos (Xavier Singleton, Chris Arturo Garza, Maria Ruizesparza, Kelly Snyder) 7102%
In addition to the lead facilitators from Simprentis, trained teachers from all of the schools facilitated the event.
