What will you learn? On completion of this course, participants are expected to: - Have confidence in dealing with different cultures
- Acquire a framweork for understanding cultural experience
- Improve communication skills in dealing with colleagues and contacts in other cultures
- Improve in interpersonal skills, managing staff and colleagues' expectations across cultures
Who should participate?Anyone working with people from other cultures in the international oil and gas industry. This includes people going abroad and people interacting with foreigners. When you recognize how a positive and open cultural attitude towards other cultures, it can lead to a cooperative relationship rather than one of resistance. When a problem or uncertainty arises, our natural tendency is to fall back on our own cultural ways of resolving the situation. To the culture you are dealing with your 'natural' strategy might be perceived as unprofessional or even cause offence, leading to a spiral of negativity, which could, in time, ruin the business relationship. Content The upstream learning simulation OilSim is used as a framework for the learning experience. Participants are grouped in teams, and each team is an oil and gas company (or petroleum authority). Throughout the seminar teams are exposed to foreign cultures, and through these experiences, they are taught how to work in a multicultural setting. The seminar is highly practical, and a toolkit is provided to help participants: - Build the culturally sensitive interpersonal skills they need
- Identify areas of synergy and how to build on them
- identify areas of difficulty and anticipate or repair problems
- Create strategies for developing inter-cultural skills to improve teamwork
