Understand the basics of seismology and other geophysical disciplines and how they fit into the oil and gas value chain.
What will you learn? On completion of this course, participants are expected to have a basic understanding of:
- Rock properties and composition
- Various acquisition methods
- Elastic waves
- Seismic data and processing
- Reservoir monitoring
Who should participate?Engineers, geologists, and other professionals who need more knowledge about geophysics in order to better communicate with geophysicists. Course contentShort to-the-point presentations of the various topics combined with practical exercises for the participants to get hands-on training and first glance into the world of a geophysicist. The participants will also be able to see the more practical application of the science and theories through the business simulation OilSim. They will be divided into small teams, each acting as a virtual petroleum company, and compete with each other throughout the course. The teams score points for both achieving the various goals in OilSim and for solving the scientific challenges. The participants will gain access to the e-learning system GeoCLASS provided by UniGEO for a period before, during and after the course. For extended access to GeoCLASS, please contact UniGEO . The course covers the following subjects: • The rock from a geophysicist perspectiveo Effective rock physics properties o Constituents o Composition
• Data acquisition o Seismic acquisition o Controlled source electromagnetic acquisition o Other methods
• Rays and waves o Wave properties o Reflection, transition, refraction and diffraction o Resolution
• Seismic processing o Common midpoint gathers o Muting o Velocity analysis and NMO correction o Stacking o Filtering
• The hydrocarbon reservoir o Source, reservoir and ceiling rock o Amplitude versus offset (AVO) o 3D seismic o 4D seismic |
